Paleo / Vegan BBQ Sauce

BBQ sauce is one of my favorite condiments all year round. I put it on veggie burgers, dip sweet potato fries in it and even love tossing it into a vinaigrette to take my salads to the next level. What I don’t love about the bbq sauces I find in the store: straight up sugar, high fructose corn syrup and other ingredients that aren’t natural.

I’m all about keeping all aspects of my food as natural as possible, so when I found this paleo bbq sauce recipe from Paleo Grubs, I loved it so much that I wanted to create my own adaptation of. I’m a huge fan of spice and this recipe has a hint of smokey flavor with a little bit of a kick…plus, it’s super easy to make.

Ingredients:

  • 15 oz. organic tomato sauce
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/3 cup of agave or maple syrup (the original recipe calls for honey if you’re not vegan)
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tsp onion powder
  • 2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 tsp ground mustard
  • 2 tsp paprika

Directions:

Whisk your spices together in a small bowl and then add all of the ingredients in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir to combine. Bring everything to a boil, and then reduce to simmer for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally (your kitchen is about to smell AMAZING, trust me!). Taste and adjust seasonings as necessary. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Makes about 1 1/2 cups.

Enjoy!

Be Well,
